This book is compiled in order to meet the needs of teachers and students of Junior High School in learning English as a foreign language in Indonesia. English learning in secondary schools emphasizes the achievement of communicative competence. The communicative competence is the ability to communicate effectively in real and natural communication context. English learners need to master not only linguistic features or generic structure of a text but also the pragmatic aspects of the target language. Pragmatics has a central role in building the communicative competence of English learner. English language learners are expected to understand the language forms and functions that are appropriate to many contexts in which a language is used. English language learners need to know the way to convey the meaning through the verbal and non-verbal communication in various expression according to the context. Therefore, this book introduces much on how language is used by real people in real contexts, in spoken and written texts. From these exposures, the learners will learn to determine the best way to communicate in various kind of context of situation and the context of the culture.
